- Red and yellow flags: swim between them.
- Black and white chequered: surfboards and craft only.
- Red flag: do not go in the water.
- No flags: no lifeguards on duty.

Dogs

On the main beach, from the Greenhill groyne to the Pavilion dog area, dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September. They are allowed all year at the dog exercise area by the Pavilion, at Greenhill and Preston, and at Bowleaze.
The Public Spaces Protection Order runs to 31 December 2026. The fixed penalty is £100, or £75 if paid early.

Hire runs 10am to 5pm in summer, weather permitting, with a 50p deposit on each item. A day's hire is:
- Deckchair

- £7.70
Deckchair saver ticket: £16 for seven days, so seven for the price of five.
- Lost children: wristbands for children from the Beach Office. Worth getting one on the way in on a busy day.
- Showers: three outdoor ones on the Beach Office building.
- Lifeguards: RNLI, May to the end of September. Swim between the flags.
- Beach wheelchairs: from the Beach Office, subject to availability.
- Accessible toilets: the council's toilets page lists them.
- Dogs: the council's dog rules.

- Beach wheelchairs: two, free, from the Beach Office by the King's Statue. Ring ahead on 01305 239832.
- Beach matting: from the King's Statue slipway, June to September.
- Barbecues: allowed on the beach, but not advised on a busy day. Take everything home.
- Changing Places toilet: at the Beach Control Office, 24 hours with a fob from the library or beach staff.
